Solar and Other Generation

As demand for residential rooftop solar, electric vehicles, and small scale storage increases, the regulatory, policy, and operational frameworks that govern the electricity network need to adapt to the assets connecting to the electricity grid.

You have more choice, power and control than ever before in how and when you use electricity but networks are still responsible for ensuring that power quality, security and reliability of supply is maintained for all consumers. To do this well and to unlock the value of having localised generation assets, the market operator, AEMO, will start managing a register of distributed energy resources, known as the DERR.

Effective 1 December 2019, networks will be collecting detailed information on the make and model of any distributed energy resources as part of this register. We will pass this information on to the market operator. This will help AEMO and the networks make better decisions about how best to invest in and manage the National Electricity Market (NEM) so that we are working in the best interest of customers.

Also on 1 December 2019, all Victorian DBs will be mandating the use “smart inverters” for new solar applications and registrations. This is the result of the increase in localised, rooftop solar installations. Smart inverters will ensure that customers experience less trip offs as a result of power quality fluctuations. It will also support the increase in uptake of solar by helping to maximise the amount of solar by feeder.

Prior to investing in solar panels, it is recommended you apply for pre-approval so you know how much export capacity you are able to install.

Connection Process

Generation up to 5kW single phase or 30kW three phase

Apply for solar pre-approval or submit a solar connections form via eConnect. (see Related Information for more details on pre-approval).

Generation between 30kW and 200kW

Request a detailed assessment using mySupply, and once we receive your application, we will contact you to guide you through the approval and connection process.

Battery storage systems less than 200 kW

Apply for pre-approval and get connected with mySupply.
