CitiPower is undertaking a program of works along Nicholson Street in Carlton North and Fitzroy North, to upgrade overhead electrical assets that form part of our network.
This work comes off the back of the recent Yarra Trams track and tram stop upgrades that saw new poles installed along Nicholson Street. CitiPower now needs to relocate our assets to the newly installed poles in order to maintain a safe and reliable power supply.
The works will include:
- Civil excavations to install new underground cables or extend existing underground cables to the new poles
- Relocate the overhead assets from the existing Yarra Trams poles to the new Yarra Trams poles
- Replace overhead wires between poles
- Replace the old CitiPower wood poles where required.
Starting on Monday 20 January 2020 and continuing for up to five months, we’ll undertake a rolling program of works to minimise disruptions to local residents and businesses.
That means whilst the whole program of works will take up to five months, we will only be in any one area on average for a couple of days, with 2 works zones and an estimated duration of up to 7 days.
Local residents and businesses will be notified about specific works in their area, 14 days prior to works commencing. Local updates about the project will also be posted below and via Facebook.
Most of the civil works will take place on week days during business hours. Local vehicle access and pedestrian access will be maintained, and traffic controllers will be on hand to guide traffic and ensure the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. Where the works affect major intersections, they will be carried out during the night.
UPDATE: 13 May
Works have been temporarily paused as crews work to resolve issues associated with unexpected ground conditions in the Brunswick village precinct. As a result, previously communicated planned outages to businesses will not be proceeding.
The team is working through options to complete the works successfully, but for now all work on Nicholson Street between Richardson and Holden have been suspended.
We will communicate next steps to stakeholders as soon as possible.
