The West Gate Tunnel Project will deliver an alternative to the West Gate Bridge and relieve congestion to Melbourne’s western suburbs.
As a result of the West Gate Tunnel Project (WGTP), various sites have been identified that will require the relocation of CitiPower assets to enable the construction.
Our work on the WGTP includes;
- Installation, jointing and termination of new 66kV & 22kV underground cable
- Removal of existing 66kV & 22kV overhead powerlines
- Construction of new 66kV & 22kV overhead powerlines
To date, our crews have successfully undergrounded 2 kilometres of 66kV overhead line and energised three feeder exits from Brooklyn Terminal Station connecting the Laverton and Bacchus Marsh substations.
Works on Stage 2 are now in full swing on the stretch of freeway between Brooklyn Terminal Station and the M80 interchange.
Our involvement in the project is expected to finish in December 2020.

Western Roads Upgrade
The $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade project is part of the Victorian Government’s ‘Big Build’ and involves major upgrades of eight main roads in Melbourne’s west and maintaining more than 260km of roads between Footscray to Werribee.
As part of the project, electricity distributor Powercor has been conducting a $18 million works program to relocate existing electrical infrastructure away from the proposed road widening works.
Powercor’s work includes:
- 4000 project management hours
- 3000 design hours
- 30,000 construction hours
With works taking place in Melbourne’s manufacturing heartland, Powercor has conducted extensive consultation with businesses and residents to minimise disruptions.
These actions include;
- Planning extensive works during a single shutdown to avoid multiple shutdowns
- Conducting night works; and
- Coordinating shutdowns with other works such as the West Gate Tunnel
Powercor thanks commuters and the local community for their patience and understanding as work continues on Western Roads Project.
