CitiPower and Powercor launch largest apprenticeship drive in 10 years

Love a challenge, keen to assist communities when they need it most and want to be part of Victoria’s clean energy transition? CitiPower and Powercor has today launched its biggest apprenticeship recruitment drive in a decade, with more than 40 roles up for grabs.

Successful candidates will undertake four-year apprenticeships as lineworkers, cable jointers and substation electricians. There are also traineeships available for protection and control testers and designers.

Roles are available regionally and in Melbourne’s metropolitan area, including Burnley, Brooklyn, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton, Colac, Mildura, Warrnambool, Maryborough, Horsham, Cobram, Kyneton and Echuca.

The annual recruitment program at CitiPower and Powercor is highly sought-after, often attracting more than 1000 applicants.

Head of Field Services, Ross Young, said annual recruitment program often attracted more than 1000 applicants and were the only apprenticeships directly offered by a Victorian network business.

“These are unique and exciting roles, with our lineworkers at the frontline when it comes to delivering essential electricity to homes and businesses across more than half the state,” Mr Young said.

“No two days are the same in these roles. You’ll also be working on everything from major infrastructure builds, to supporting the transition to cleaner energy, to responding to natural disasters and weather events.”

Mr Young said about two thirds of the field workforce at CitiPower and Powercor originally started with the businesses as apprentices.

“These roles provide a fantastic start in a career that can last a lifetime. Our teams are highly supportive and our commitment to investing in our people means there is plenty of opportunity to grow and build skills,” he said.

“We want people of all ages, genders and backgrounds to apply. Whether you have just finished high school or are looking for a change in career, we want to hear from you.”

“In recent years, there has been more women securing an apprenticeship with the business, and last year we had four women join us, which was a record.”

The selection process involves written, practical and interview-based selection criteria, but getting good people is always the main consideration.

“The right candidates will be team players, have a commitment to safety and want to make a difference in the communities they live and work in,” Mr Young said.

“The roles suit people who enjoy working outdoors and at heights, in all types of weather, and who have a passion for hands-on learning.”

To apply, candidates must have completed, or be completing, Year 11 VCE or VCAL and achieved a pass in General Maths/Numeracy or have completed (or be completing) a pre-apprenticeship TAFE training course in Electrotechnology (Cert II).
