The Port of Melbourne Supply Project will provide the Port with an alternative back-up supply, ensuring continued reliability should any potential interruption to supply be caused. It will also ensure ongoing safety and reliability to the wider network.

Project Outcomes

The Port of Melbourne is Australia’s largest capital city container and general cargo port, handling more than one-third of the nation’s container trade, operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The West Gate Tunnel Project (WGTP) works includes the construction of an overhead roadway directly over the CitiPower Dock Area Zone Substation (DA ZSS) which feeds the Port of Melbourne. To mitigate any risks during the construction of the WGTP overhead roadway, we are building a secondary power connection to the port.

The installation of a permanent back-up supply cable will occur from our West Gate Zone Substation in Fishermans Bend, along Turner Street, Graham Street, Lortimer Street, Docklands Drive and under the Yarra River, to supply the Port of Melbourne.

Construction works are now complete with installations completed below the Bolte Bridge and cables hauled under the Yarra River and Moonee Ponds Creek.

Public Art

We partnered with the City of Melbourne and engaged respected indigenous artist Mandi Burton to brighten up three Units beneath the Bolte Bridge as part of the Project.

The artwork is a bold and striking depiction of the past, present and future of the Moonee Ponds Creek, which runs through the three boxes, chosen by the artist to represent how it has changed over time and what the creek means to communities.

The first box represents how it was, when different tribes would come here to fish, catch eels, trade and barter.

The next one is how it is now, a much smaller creek with a lot more buildings, roads and other infrastructure.

The third box represents a future where the creek has been revitalised and recovered almost to how it was, getting bigger, and how people will be connecting to the creek in the future with their families.
