Network testing to keep power safe and reliable

Network planning & projectsAnnual network testing to keep power safe and reliable

In November and December 2025, CitiPower and Powercor will be conducting a series of short tests on the electricity networks as part of our work to keep power safe and reliable, particularly during times of high solar activity.

During the test, we’ll temporarily reduce solar exports from small-scale solar systems to zero. Each test will last up to 90 minutes.

Solar exports and solar systems will automatically resume operating after each test is complete.

These tests will only affect solar systems or combined solar and battery systems installed or upgraded after 1 October 2024 and are set up to have exports remotely reduced.

What are you testing?

Our customers’ desire for a cleaner energy future has resulted in one of the largest uptakes of rooftop solar in Australia. During the day, all that solar provides abundant, low-cost energy for all consumers. But on occasions when demand for energy is low, this abundance can create imbalances in the electricity network. If these imbalances aren’t addressed, they can lead to widespread power outages.

We can now use technology to remotely reduce exports from solar systems if there is excess energy in the network.

We run annual tests to make sure this technology works effectively and can respond quickly when needed. The Victorian Government requires us to run these tests.

What will I notice during these tests?

For up to 90 minutes, your system will not be able to export solar into the network. Once the test is complete, your system should automatically return to normal.

If your system hasn’t returned to normal, we will contact you to let you know.

Our advice will be to check your system is switched on and connected to the internet. If it’s still not working, contact us at newenergyservices@powercor.com.au or 1800 772 940.

These tests won’t affect your power supply.

When will you hold these tests?

We will be conducting these tests during November and December 2025. The tests are scheduled for:

  • CitiPower: 5 November, 2025
  • Powercor: 19 November, 2025
  • CitiPower and Powercor: 3 December, 2025
  • CitiPower and Powercor: 10 December, 2025

Due to weather or other events, we may need to reschedule this test. We will update this page with new dates if we need to change the testing times.

I’m a solar installer – what do these tests mean for me?

You can continue installing solar systems and running backstop tests during this time.

If you have any questions, please email our New Energy Services Team at newenergyservices@powercor.com.au or 1800 772 940
