A new electricity terminal station is being developed in Tarneit as part of a major investment to support customers and strengthen the electricity network. It will support the growing community and local businesses in Melbourne’s fast-growing outer west, providing the infrastructure needed to keep pace with growth.

Project Outcomes

Works

Powercor is planning to build a terminal station at 1005 Boundary Road, Tarneit, where it will be connected to existing transmission lines. The site is intended for industrial land uses and the provision of utility infrastructure and essential services. The site is located directly underneath existing transmission lines and in an area where new demand for electricity is growing.

Why is this project important?

Melbourne’s western suburbs are growing quickly, with more homes and businesses relying on electricity every day. To support this growth, the electricity network needs more capacity.

A new terminal station will allow more electricity to be delivered into the local area, helping keep power reliable for households, local businesses and major employers. This infrastructure is essential to support continued growth and ensure Melbourne’s west continues to have safe and reliable power supply into the future.

Next steps and community involvement

The application is currently awaiting Minister approval.

Following the approval, we will begin engaging with local residents, landholders and community groups to share information about the project and gather feedback.

We are committed to listening to the community and considering feedback on anything that can be modified. Elements such as the site location and the equipment needed to operate the station cannot be changed.

FAQs

What is a terminal station?

Terminal stations are an essential part of Victoria’s electricity system, with more than 50 terminal stations across Victoria. They contain specialised equipment that lowers the high-voltage electricity from transmission lines to levels suitable for local distribution.

From there, the electricity either goes to large industrial customers or to local substations, which further reduce the voltage before delivering it to homes, businesses and industry.

At the new Mount Cottrell Terminal Station, electricity will be delivered via existing 220 kV transmission lines. The station will then step the 220 kV down to 132 kV to support the local area and supply large local customers.

Location of project

The new terminal station will be located at 1005 Boundary Road, Tarneit.
